M-payment: QkR Tested in Australian Cinemas
- MasterCard and the Commonwealth Bank have just started piloting the implementation of m-payment solution QkR.
- Moviegoers owning either an iPhone or Android-based Smartphone will be able to order food and drinks and pay for these without leaving their seats. First, they launch the QkR app, then, they have three possibilities to choose from: scanning the QR code, tapping an NFC-capable device placed on the arm rest or typing in the unique scan code manually. Once this process completed, they can browse through the products lists to select items. All purchases go through the m-wallet storing the pre-entered data (given when first using the app).
- These pilot tests will be carried out for several weeks from January onwards with the help of two partner La Premiere Hoyts cinemas.
- The transaction information is not to be stored on the mobile device and QkR can be configured to request the number every time a purchase is being made.
- Designed by MasterCard Labs, QkR has been presented in September 2011. This test does not prevent CBA from disposing of its own mobile payment solution, Commbank Kaching (for P2P and contactless payments) and asserts this banks’ interest in mobile innovation.
- This added value smart ordering service proposes different options to enter the requested code.
- MasterCard relies on m-payment solutions and their various possible uses (retail, leisure, “couch-commerce”, etc.). Last September, the group also presented a combination of QkR with Microsoft’s Kinect to make payments without even using a remote control (see September 2011 Insight).
