In brief: The Eurosystem opens applications for the Digital Euro Pilot

In the continuity of its validation the Parliament, and in order to meet the deadlines previously set for the deployment of the Digital Euro project, the Eurosystem is moving ahead and now invites payment service providers (PSPs) to apply for the next full-scale digital euro pilot.

The pilot programme, which will extend over one year from the second half of 2027, aims to validate the main features envisaged for the digital euro. The experiments will cover a wide range of usage cases: transfers between individuals, in-store regulations or online platforms, as well as offline operations. These tests will involve the staff of the central banks concerned, traders sorted on the tier and the selected PSPs.

Beyond transactional functionality, this phase will examine how users interact with the proposed tools: fluid interfaces, sequence of screens, understanding of actions or general visual perceptions. The aim is to identify in an advanced way the adjustments needed to achieve a coherent and convincing experience.

It is also stated that the digital euro used in these tests will remain a beta version, strictly confined to the pilot environment and without any legal monetary status.

Finally, it should be noted that PSP applications will be selected according to a myriad of criteria to endorse their ability to participate effectively in the scheme. These requirements will include: strong compliance with the regulatory framework, control of technical and operational environments, sufficient presence in the payments market and diversity in both size and business models.

PSPs wishing to file their file are invited to do so until May 14.
