EPI confirms Wero's arrival in Luxembourg

The digital payment portfolio Wero will soon be, and in accordance with ambitions EPI (European Payments Initiative) proposed to Luxembourg. Several local banks have just formalized joining the initiative as members to allow their customers to make payments via Wero. This announcement represents an important new step to counter EuroPA.

FACTS

  • Wero's deployment process for Luxembourg customers is now officially launched. EPI just made the official announcement.
  • This deployment will be ensured thanks to the involvement of local actors: Spuerkeess, BGL BNP Paribas, the International Bank of Luxembourg (BIL), POST Luxembourg and Banque Raiffeisen, who officially join EPI.
  • The service launch date is September 2026. Wero customers can then:
    • making instant account payments in Luxembourg and abroad (with Belgium, France, Germany and later the Netherlands).
    • making payments online and at points of sale via Wero,
    • Pay their bills.
  • Payconiq will disappear on this occasion, replaced by Wero. The FinTech LUXHUB ensures the transition between services as a technical provider.
  • Wero will gradually be offered to Luxembourg traders next year.

ISSUES

  • Adhering to its objectives : The deployment of the Wero service in Luxembourg takes place after successful launches in Germany in France and Belgium. EPI also emphasises its long-standing objectives of 2026 for the launch of Wero in Luxembourg.
  • Countering competition : With this deployment in Luxembourg, EPI can now rely on the accession of five new local banks. This announcement comes shortly after those of the support of Worldline, integration of Nuvei and Revolut, and on the margins of deployment concurrent EuroPA.

PERSPECTIVE

  • EPI highlights the deeply pan-European nature of Luxembourg, of which more than half of the workforce was born in a country other than Luxembourg. The initiative thus makes the new country that will deploy Wero an illustration of the interest of the solution, centralized and without borders.
  • Wero now has over 40 million registered users according to EPI. As a reminder, in-store payments, subscription management or loyalty programs are also scheduled for 2026 by EPI.
