Micro-Payment: Gemalto Rolls Out Celego in Taiwan Transit Network

• Gemalto has come to an agreement with the contactless specialist EasyCard in charge of managing Taipei’s transportation tickets. This partnership will allow for the implementation of Gemalto’s Celego on the contactless cards currently used by 30 million users in Taipei’s metro and car parking lots.

• Taipei travellers may go for this new multi-application solution to make both contact and contactless micro-payments.

• Celego will come along with online features including account balance consultation, transaction history, e-payments and even access to governmental services.

• This card complies with the Taiwan Financial Supervisory Commission security requirements.

• Gemalto’s transit card solutions have already been rolled out in seven European countries (France, Sweden and the UK for instance) and worldwide (US, Mexico or even China). All in all, roughly 140 million cards have been issued in about 30 of the World’s largest towns.

• EasyCard aims at ensuring the deployment of a unique ticketing solution nationwide, and providing an additional micro-payment service relying on a convenient and easy-to-use medium.

• This is not the only such initiative (encompassing transportation and micro-payment solution) in Asia: Hong Kong, for instance, has rolled out the Octopus card.
