EMVco Recognising GlobalPlatform Compliance Program

  • EMVCo standard organisation gathering American Express, MasterCard, Visa and JCB, has recognised GlobalPlatform’s Compliance Program for validating secure elements (SEs).
  • GlobalPlatform, started its certification programme in 2011, and aims at developing guidelines for mobile embedded security components deployment and management.
  • EMVCo will be testing the Application Activation User Interface of all SEs relying on the specifications listed and GlobalPlatform Compliance Program approved (Letter of Qualification). GlobalPlatform is currently testing UICC SEs (Universal Integrated Circuit Card to be found in SIM cards) and should widen its scope in 2012to cover testing for embedded SEs and microSDs.
  • EMVCo was founded in 1999 to manage, maintain and improve standards designed to ensure international mobile payment acceptance and interoperability. In December 2011, this body also released a White paper entitled EMVCo White Paper on Contactless Mobile Payments to provide update on its Contactless Mobile Payment (CMP)-dedicated standardisation effort.
  • This announcement asserts the interest of partitioning sensitive data to avoid illegitimate access to payment apps for instance. In fact, these risks have further been illustrated these past weeks by the issues regarding Google Wallet’s security (see dedicated news), and are now impacting customers trust as well as the overall m-payment and m-banking market.
