American Express Launching Online Comparison for In store Purchases with Loyalty Points

  • American Express and eBay have just entered an official partnership to promote the use of the mobile shopping assistance app RedLaser through its Membership Reward programme.
  • American Express and RedLaser partnership has given birth to a price comparison solution for ShopAmex e-store based on the reward programme members’ loyalty points.
  • These members will be able to use RedLaser to compare prices with those available on ShopAmex, which includes a network of partner brands, as well as specific offers related to their loyalty rewards (discounts).
  • This solution should push Membership Reward members to use their American Express means of payment more often, even in mobile and online payment contexts, and help remind them to redeem their loyalty points.
  • RedLaser, bought by eBay in 2010, is primarily a shopping assistant (price comparison through barcode scanning). A recent assessment highlights that the app has been downloaded 15 million times since it has been launched.
  • ShopAmex online store gathers five million products from 60 major online brands. This partnership has only just been forged; yet, RedLaser will already make it possible to compare nearly four million products available on ShopAmex.
  • This announcement should strengthen American Express’s strategy as it intends to develop alternative mobile services for its customers. In fact, the network noted that two-third of its loyalty reward programme members actually use their mobile phone or tablet, including to pay for online purchases.
