Bordeaux Getting Started

  • In the frame of the “Bordeaux, Ma ville mobile” initiative started in 2007, Bordeaux (in partnership with several players including manufacturers, banks and operators) has launched a full range of NFC mobile services in the beginning of December. These services are accessible through kiosks using a mobile phone or a dedicated card.
  • This approach should be applied to a variety of municipal equipment (schools’ dining halls, sports equipment, libraries, culture, car parking, public transportation, etc.). It will also allow contactless payment and help provide for loyalty programmes.
  • With time, 18 NFC services should be proposed via different media (contactless cards, mobile, USB keys, 2D barcodes and NFC tags).
  • These kinds of aggregated services for urban users are increasing today. Several French towns are interested in these projects –including Bordeaux, Caen, Marseille, Metz, Strasbourg, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Toulouse– and could now share their respective experience in deploying face-to-face contactless services.
  • Bordeaux, for its part, has favoured a variety of media however mobile-based dematerialisation seems to be generally preferred. In February, Bordeaux Municipality started with dematerialising the Ville card and intended to encompass several fields including education, participation, mobility, care taking, etc. This experiment has been conducted during six months based on contactless services with the help of 300 inhabitants of Bordeaux disposing of NFC compatible mobile phones, cards or contactless USB keys. Orange, Moneo and Applicam provided the required equipment.
  • Here again, payments are part of the proposed services: partaking merchants must then be equipped with the required acceptance terminals.
  • In Caen, a dematerialisation project is also being carried out –see dedicated News: "M-wallet: EasyMove, 1st French NFC Services-Dedicated Platform"– the mobile platform EasyMove has been favoured.
