Authentication: MasterCard Display Card Making Progress in Romania
- At CARTES & IDentification 2011 Trade event, MasterCard announced its OTP generating card, Display Card, has been selected by the Romanian banks Credit Europe Bank and Carpatica Bank.
- This card designed by NagraID has been unveiled in 2010 in partnership with the Turkish bank TEB (BNP Paribas group) – see June 2010 Insight. Its enhanced authentication features help secure both online transactions and current operations such as account balance or transaction history consultation, etc.
- According to Credit Europe Bank, adopting the Display Card allows them to further invest in innovative banking services. Carpatica, for its part, insists on its attractive cost/effectiveness ratio.
- OTP generating cards cost more to manufacture than their traditional counterparts but they appear quite popular. In fact, as added value devices, they may respond to the current need for secure, strong authentication solutions considering the growth of mobile payments. Both Visa and MasterCard propose this kind of card (respectively, CodeSure and Display Card); manufacturers are also increasingly interested in these media: Gemalto, for instance, already proposes the Ezio card (see November 2010 Insight).
- The Display Card has been launched in Taiwan in October 2010 and proposed for commercialisation to the US market in February 2011. It is now being proposed to the EU market where Visa CodeSure has also managed to convince some customers since June 2010 (its contactless version has been adopted by Switzerland-based Cornèr in October 201o).
