Frauds on eBay
- After several cases of fraud were noted, including through websites such as www.craiglist.org and eBay, the US asks for the extradition of 22 suspects arrested in Romania.
- 20 million dollars were supposedly stolen from a large number of US Internet users.
- E-merchants have to take into account the ratio risk/value of the asset to be protected and reassess it regularly. Also, factors such as ergonomics and simplicity of use must be kept in mind when designing an e-commerce website in order not to discourage potential purchasers.
- Organised, professional networks now take advantage of banking data theft (fraudulent purchases, goods sold on parallel markets, identity usurpation, etc.). These cases also affect the image of the victim website as well as the Web users’ trust: such consequences are often underestimated.
- Several possible options are proposed to the e-merchants: addition of the high cost of fraud prevention to the price of goods or services (and related risk, including the loss of customers looking for good deals); selection of a third party (insurer, 3D Secure, etc.); limitation of the delivery area; fraud detection and scoring tools (CRM, transactional, etc.).
