In Brief: Amazon expands its payment service with the palm of your hand
Web giant Amazon is continuing to roll out its Amazon One palmprint recognition payment solution. After starting to enrol Whole Foods Market shops earlier in 2021, 65 shops in the California area will now be able to offer the device.
Amazon One was presented as a revolutionary concept of payment through the palm of the hand in 2020. Since then, the concept has also been focused on the ticketing sector, but has struggled to expand in the US.
Today, however, Amazon has taken another key step by allowing 65 new Whole Foods shops to integrate the technology across California. Customers at participating shops can now set up Amazon One by registering their palm print directly at their preferred retail location or at a dedicated kiosk.
All they need to do is provide a payment card and phone number, agree to Amazon One's terms of use and share an image of their palm.
Customers can then pay at the checkout by simply scanning their hand.
Several Whole Foods, Amazon Go, Books and Fresh locations were already testing the palm scanning technology in the Los Angeles area, as well as in Austin, Seattle and New York City. However, this latest announcement of a 65-store rollout represents a significant acceleration in the adoption of the solution.
