BBVA Deploys New Generation ATMs

The Spanish banking group BBVA is working in association with NCR and Fujitsu to deploy 200 new generation ATMs, called ABIL, in Spain before deploying them on an international level, primarily in the United States and in South America.

  • This range of ATMs displays a touchscreen-based graphical interface with a virtual buttons related to the current operation: possible access to the different options from the home page, digital keypad to key in the PIN code, etc. When the cardholder enters his card, his interactions with the ATM are customised and the functions he uses most often are shown. Shortcuts can also be displayed so that he can access his preferred accounts directly.
  • This new type of ATM also offers other innovative features such as a screen that can perform a 90° rotation to make the customer feel more secure and a unique slot for withdrawals, banknote deposits and receipts.

Comments

  • For this deployment, BBVA first tried to redefine the notion of self-service banking and partnered with the consulting firm Ideo which studies cardholders’ behaviour when using an ATM.
  • This initiative is original in that it was initiated by a banking institution and not by ATM manufacturers, which usually dominate this market. In addition, with these new generation ATMs, the user’s experience is at the heart of BBVA’s consideration, and the banking institution seems to be trying to propose unique and diversified services. Moreover, the flexible architecture of these devices allows them to integrate new functions which will allow them to evolve over time.
