Walmart Proposes Cash Payments to Its Online Shoppers

  • Walmart just added its new "Pay with Cash" payment option designed to enable its online shoppers to pay for their purchases using cash.
  • Customers who do not have payment cards or do not wish to use these cards online, can now choose the "Cash" option on the payment page and also have access to a broader range of products than in their hypermarket.
  • Once customers has finished ordering, they print out the order confirmation or simply copy an order number that can be used in a Walmart store within 48 hours. The point of sale processes the order and prepares delivery as soon as payment is accepted. The customer can pick up the order or have it delivered at home.

  • We are now seeing the "Cash" option available alongside card payments, PayPal and BillMeLater.
  • Walmart has provided a solution for those customers requiring an online solution offering cash payments or similar: according to a recent study by the retailer, more than 67% of people claiming to be "underbanked" would be willing to pay online if cash payments were proposed. This reflects customer behaviour in-store, where only 15% of purchases are paid for using credit cards. Walmart evokes the figures issued by the FDIC (2009), showing that one in four American households falls into the "underbanked or unbanked" categories, with 81% of the unbanked and 63% of the underbanked claiming that they have an Internet connection (figures issued by Javelin Strategy and Research, 2011).
  • This solution is also similar to solutions such as PayNearMe (formally Kwedit), which thanks to a partnership with 7-Eleven offers shoppers the possibility to pay in cash for online purchases.
