Voyages-SNCF.com Praising 3D Secure

  • Voyages-SNCF.com intends to reduce online fraud and has opted for 3D Secure: it even talks about literally eradicating fraud. Once his card data entered, the customer receives an SMS OTP to be notified for payment validation. The user has three chances to authenticate, failing which his card is locked.
  • The specialist explains having reached satisfying results in 2011, despite foreshadowed 20% looses: its shopping cart abandonment rate even decreased 2%. Voyages-SNCF.com has sold 60 million tickets in 2011 (or one third of SNCF’s overall tickets sales) and bets on even more conclusive results for 2012.

  • 3D Secure applies to all tickets sales on the Voyages-SNCF.com. This service is free for Carte Bleue, Visa and MasterCard cardholders but has not been generally adopted in France, despite the users growing awareness of this security feature. It may, just as well, be potentially impacted by various constraints –Including failures in network coverage (OTP SMS).
  • Systems disparities from one bank to the other should also be taken into account: SMS OTP, IVR, birth date or OTP generators (calculators, tokens, etc.). Customers protection associations are now fighting for the implementation of a unified system (see February 2012 Insight).
