Ziraat Bank Preparing Largest Biometric ATM Network

  • Turkey-based Ziraat Bank is on its way to build up the widest biometric ATM network in Europe by January 2012. In order to do so it purchased 1,505 GRGBanking recycling ATMs equipped with palm vein readers. In addition, 1,400 GRG desktop biometric readers should also be installed in its branches during the same period.
  • The selected technology relies on palm vein recognition. Once the card inserted in the ATM and the PIN code entered, the cardholder holds places his hand over a sensor for ID verification. The biometric data is only stored on the card.
  • The 35 million dollars contract signed with the Chinese manufacturer GRGBanking in April 2011 after conclusive tests were conducted enables the bank to stand as a pioneer in biometric identification applied to the banking sector.
  • Also, the trials enabled Ziraat Bank to note that recycling banknotes did make it possible to reduce the costs and risks associated with cash replenishment and service.
  • These kinds of devices are particularly popular in Southeast Asia and could also be of interest for the European market. This considered, GRG is trying to set foot in this area and started by convincing Eastern European players.
