Discover Reviving Its One-Time Card Numbers Service

  • After Discover had decided to discontinue its Secure Online Account Numbers programme, cardholders expressed their discontent and managed to convince their network of the legitimacy of this online feature. As a result, the one-time disposable card numbers are again proposed.
  • The network had decided to leave this option aside last September as it deemed that already deployed credit card industry measures were securing enough (including zero dollar fraud liability).
  • Also, a same code can be used to make several purchases with the same e merchant.
  • This is not the only initiative of this kind, only few US banks now propose virtual card services. For instance, in 2004, American Express decided to discontinue its Private Payments service for similar reasons.
  • In France, several financial institutions have launched more or less successful virtual cards. The e-Carte Bleue has been the most popular: about 5% of the online purchasers are now equipped (including customers usually resistant to online card use).
  • This initiative asserts the importance of online procedures in making customers feel more secure when performing online purchases (despite increasing confidence rates).
