eBay Buys Magento Platform
- eBay has completed the acquisition of the major open e-commerce platform Magento. The agreement announced in June follows eBay’s taking a majority share in Magento in 2010.
- Magento provides e merchants with software solutions to manage and optimise their online activity: catalogue, customer experience and process, website functions, etc. The offer is also proposed as a Software-as-a-Service, with payment per use features, Magento Go. This service includes an inventory management tool.
- This acquisition strengthens the innovation capabilities of eBay’s own e-commerce platform, X.Commerce, the operation of which will still be carried on separately in a first step, with its own segment focus. Magento will however become eBay’s products brand.
- In July 2011, eBay purchased the m-payment specialist Zong. Beyond its success in the e-payment sector through its subsidiary PayPal, the online sales leader wishes to carry on designing the worldwide e-commerce ecosystem.
