Triton and ATMGurus Partner to Help Banks Comply with Accessibility Requirements

  • US-based maintainer ATMGurus proposes to help financial institutions and independent ATM deployment networks with their ATM compliance and replacement processes so they can meet US accessibility requirements. The manufacturer Triton is in charge of financing the transportation of the machines for them to be adapted or, if impossible, have them dismantled and their pieces reused.
  • ATMs will have to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by 15 March 2012. Among the required features: audio guides, adapted keypads, physical accessibility requirements (height of the ATM), Braille impression of the receipts, etc.
  • In order to enforce compliance, complaints can be filed by customers and by the DoJ. Financial institutions can be fined up to 55,000 dollars civil penalty for a first offense and twice this amount for subsequent offenses.
  • The high cost of this compliance process led these players to propose assistance to financial institutions.
  • In Europe, the adaptation of banking services is also in process; this is for instance highlighted by initiatives supported by Diebold in Italy or BNP Paribas Fortis in Belgium.

  • In France, the 2005 law for equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship of disabled persons specifies that banking institutions, just most other institutions receiving customers, should comply with a set of standards to enable access by all to their services (audio services, Braille account statements, ATM accessibility –sector in which much work is left to do–, access to the branches, etc.).
