Alternative Media: 2D Codes Carved on Coins
- To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the Royal Dutch Mint issues collector coins with carved 2D codes starting mid-June.
- Several limited edition coins have been issued: silver 5 and gold 10 euro coins. The user scan the 2D code carved at the back of the medium and is directed to the event’s website (http://www.q5g.nl/), which, since 22 June, allows access to a video as well as a game presenting the already issued commemorative coins.
- The institutional website also provides information on the coins’ production process, their designer and on the institution itself.
- 2D codes have been carved on coins for the very first time. This initiative aims at advertising the event (the unusual nature of this limited edition makes it of high interest for numismatists) and educating the carriers (since the code leads to a website dedicated to the history of this institution and its headlines).
- The use of 2D codes remains limited in spite of their increasing diffusion on all sorts of media; this initiative confirms their interest in promotional campaigns and provides the users with additional information through different channels.
- In should be reminded that last February in Canada, Mobio Identity Systems published a report on the evolution of the use of 2D codes in North America and highlighted their interest in promoting new products.
