ANZ / Visa Pilot Test Shortened?

  • ANZ, one of the main banks in New Zealand has just started a test on mobile payment through the use of NFC stickers and microSD cards embedded in BlackBerry Smartphones with the help of its employees.
  • This initiative adds to the banks issuing of contactless MasterCard payment cards making it possible to pay for purchases up to 80 New-Zealand dollars (45 euros).
  • ANZ has started two initiatives to boost contactless payments in a country characterised by its low equipment in contactless POS terminal. WestPac stadium, Eden Park, Hell Pizza and Saint Pierre’s Sushi were the first to adopt these terminals.
  • In Australia, ANZ and Visa also started a one month experiment in March to test mobile payment through microSD cards.
  • Nevertheless, the bank has just announced this pilot has been stopped, because the selected technology did not fit all of the banks’ requirements. To this point, the bank has not been supporting contactless technology through microSD cards but carries on looking for other contactless payment solutions. We could think that some security-related weaknesses or apprehensions might have caused this interruption.
